Model number and video mode / region
Every gaming console is a part of a video region, the major standards are PAL, NTSC, and SECAM. Look at this picture to find your region. Also take a look at the howto for more information.

Copyright year
This is the year printed on the bottom of the console, close to the serialnumber. The text is grey and can be hard to read.

DVD drive serial
The DVD drive board serial can usually reveal when a big new revision has been done to the DVD drive. It's located between the power-cable and the orange data-cable.

DVD controller chip
The DVD drive chip is the most important piece of information to identify the model version of the Wii. To find the DVD controller modelnumber, you have to open the Wii and look at the smaller of the two big IC-chips. It starts with GC2-DXX. There is no GC2R-D2B chipset, only GC2-D2B.

DVD controller - Cut pins
Some of the first machines had 3 pins cut on the DVD controller, these were normally machines with a D2B controller.

DVD controller - Missing pad
On some machines with the D2B controller, the third solderpad to connect a modchip, are missing.

DVD controller - Metal clip
There are two versions of the D2C controller, D2C v1 and D2C v2 (aka. D2C2). The new v2 can be identified by looking for a metal clip on top of the drive near the spinning cog.

DVD controller - Black glue
Some of the newest D2E machines appearing in September 2008 had the drive chip covered in black epoxy glue. Probably to counter the installation of modchips.

DVD controller - Large D3 chip is missing text typed on it?
After the new drive chip-less D3/D2Nothing drive appeared, a new revision (D3-2) was found in some machines coming back from repair in Canada, Netherlands, and Korea. It can be identified by looking at the top of the large IC chip on the dvd drive board, if there is no text it's the new D3-2 revision.

DVD controller - Smaller drive board
Nindento has shrunk the drive board design on the newest Wiis produced in the beginning of 2010. The circuit board is half the size of the older models, all the other mechanics and laser unit is the same. It was unofficially called the D3S before, now it's called D4.
